How to Choose Between Imperial Systems and Donaldson Torit Filters

Dec 10, 2014

When it comes to selecting the right filters for your dust collector system, you have many options. With so many options like Imperial Systems, Camfil Farr and Donaldson Torit filters available, how do you choose between them all?

Torit FiltersOne of the best ways to determine the quality of dust collector cartridge filters is to look at the efficiency measurements of each filter. There are a number of different measurements of efficiency, so it may be helpful to sift through a few of them to gain a better understanding of exactly what each of them denotes.

Lets take a quick look at a few of the most common efficiency measurements of replacement cartridge filters for dust collection systems that you will want to consider when examining Imperial and Torit filters.

Efficiency Measurements for Imperial Systems and Torit Filters:

  1.   Gravimetric Analysis: This method of efficiency measurement is established by the amount of particles able to be captured by weight of the particles. This measurement is expressed in a percentage. For instance, if a filter has a 99.9% efficiency, that percentage refers to the ability to capture particles that are of a certain weight (perhaps .5 μm and above).
  2.    MERV Scale: MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value and the scale runs from one to sixteen (sixteen being the highest efficiency). This type of efficiency measurement is useful in determining the quality of a dust collection filter, but it is not the most indicative measurement because the scale was originally designed for HVAC filters.
  3.    Mass Density Efficiency: The third form of efficiency measurement is mass density efficiency, which is the weight per unit volume of air. This is perhaps the most significant form of efficiency measurement because it is the measurement that regulation administrations such as OSHA and the EPA use for filters. You will want your filters to meet the standards of these administrations.
  4.    Future Filter Efficiency Measurement: The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is reportedly working on a new and improved scale on which the efficiency of dust collection system filters will be measured. Look for this new form of measurement within the next couple of years.

The efficiency of your air filters are a huge factor for the successful functioning of your dust collection system. Imperial systems offers filters with the highest MERV rating in the industry that meet OSHA and EPA standards. Imperial Systems’ filters also have the longest filter life in the industry, which far surpasses the life of Donaldson Torit filters. If you are currently using a Torit filter, you might want to look into its efficiency and compare it to the products offered by Imperial Systems.
